New series: End time things!

Hi folks,
Hope you are doing good? In the next few weeks we are going to be unveiling a number of new article series for your reading pleasure, learning and edification. Today we begin with our series on end time things.
I am sure that like most people you have been reading the news lately and making comments like “Jesus come soon” or “this is a sign of the end times”. I know that I have. It appears that the world has gone completely mad with what is going on around us. Wickedness and craziness have become the order of the day. Every time you think that you have heard it all, you hear something worse. Our families and societies are in complete turmoil. Immorality is no longer considered a big deal. You can do whatever you want in many societies without consequences. Sometimes I cant help but worry – what type of world will my children inherit?
end-time-signs-chartIn this series, we will be focusing on events that are transformational in nature, events that impact and shape our world negatively. While we as Christians do not partake of these events (hopefully!), they do affect the world around us. Our children ask us questions when they hear about these events. Its on TV. Its on the news. We have to be aware of what is going on and know how to respond intelligently to anyone who asks us.

Please note that we do not claim to be experts on end time theology, as there are so many people who are experts on the Isreali- Palestinian conflict, and what each stage of the conflict means for world peace. That is NOT the focus of this series. Instead we will focus on social issues as they affect our values, our morals, our families, our relationships, our worldviews- basically events that affect our minds and the way we see the world. These are very important events, as they influence the way we think, feel and subsequently act.  We must watch these events carefully, and be wary of the way we allow them to affect us.
For this series, we will not limit ourselves to Nigeria or Africa alone. We will focus on worldwide events with important implications for our lives. The use of technology has made a world a very small place, such that events in Stockholm reverberate all the way to Ijebu in a matter of seconds.
in choosing what events to focus on in this series, we use two major scriptures to guide us:

2 Timothy 3: 1-5
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

Matthew 24: 3-13
The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age

3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all[a] these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences,[b] and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Please note that the purpose of this series is not to be able to say this is when Christ will return. Absolutely NOT!  Nobody knows when Christ will return. The purpose is to say – things are accelerating, the world is degenerating. He may come soon. Be prepared. Be ready.  You must be like the Sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, and therefore knew what to do, how to live, how to behave. As we talk about the wickedness that surrounds us, let this information motivate you to come out and be different. Let there be a marked difference between light and darkness. Let us avoid the traps of the world.

May we all be blessed with understanding as we proceed. Amen!
