God does not have Alzheimers!

Admin note: This is long, and I normally would have split it into two. But I find the article so awesome, I think y’all need to get the full gist immediately! I love the way Dewunmi’s mind works. I hope this article is helpful to somebody out there. It definitely encouraged me.  For those of you who don’t know the songs that she mentioned at the end, I am also including them for your convenience. Enjoy!

GOD will not forget 1I had recently read about a Nigerian couple, who had been married for 16 years without a child, and in their desperation took their frustration to the extreme by setting their Holy Bibles ablaze. Quite sadly, they had failed to understand who God is and the fact that he does not have Alzheimers.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) simply defined is a neurological disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. As humans we forget things. We easily forget names, faces, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, hospital appointments, business appointments amongst others. Even individuals at one point or the other temporarily forget who they are. Our forgetfulness can be attributed to the fact that we are humans and our human memory fails us even when we have the very best intentions. We make promises every now and then; some made casually but yet heavily relied on by the other party. Some people have very good intentions and would sincerely want to make good their promises but somehow are unable to do so due to the myriads of distractions around them and so completely forget what they had promised. The reality again is that we are still humans. However the good news is that we have a God; who listens, remembers and cares for an estimated world population of 7.184 billion and yet doesn’t forget nor is he in anyway distracted. Isn’t it amazing that God multitasks heavily and still doesn’t forget or let things slip by? He is bombarded 24/7 with thousands of requests from mankind and none of which he forgets. I am convinced that is why the Yorubas call him ADANIMAGBAGBE, ALESHELEWI and ALEWILESHE (i.e. The One who creates and never forgets; the One who does as he has promised; and the One who promises what he would do.)
Does GOD forget his people?
Certainly not! Sometimes we feel that God has forgotten us. It is understandably natural to sometimes feel so. The Bible recorded a number of instances where people thought that God had forgotten them. The disciples distraught with fear and panic woke Jesus up and asked him in Mark 4:38 “Master, don’t You care that we are perishing?” Psalm 77:9 says, “Has God forgotten to be merciful?” while Psalm 31 also says “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?”Even Jesus at some point cried out from the cross, “My God, why have Thou forsaken me.” But the comforting truth is that despite the dreary circumstances, God remains God anyway and anyday.
Isaiah 49:14-16 says “14 But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me. 15 Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely, they may forget, yet I will not forget you.16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”
God’s response to Zion in the above text dispels the tiniest of fears and is also very persuasive. His response is one of uncomplicated equivalence. He said “Can a mother forget her child who nurses at her breast? Can a mother have no compassion for the child that she brought forth in travail? But then some earthly mothers may get Alzheimers and forget their children, but I will never forget you.” David also had that assurance when he said “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up” Psalms 27:10. Like the loving father that he is, God is very mindful of you at all times. He knows who you are and every single detail about you.
GOD will not forget 2The second parallel that God used was conveyed in verse 16 of the text. The first part of the verse says “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands”. Isn’t it wonderful and remarkable that we are engraven in God’s palms? Does the fact that you are perpetually inscribed in God’s palm not make you so special? The later part of verse 16 says “Your walls are continually before me,” God has engraved us on the palms of His hands. The word ‘engrave’ is like tattoo or an embossment, it is an everlasting reminder, not written, but permanently inscribed. God knows what you are going through, because you are precious. Imagine, the creator of this world, has you on His palms. What else do we need in life? The reference to “walls” here means a memorial that continually reminded God about Zion, her walls and her ruins. The immutable truth is that You and I are an enduring memorial to the grace and glory of God. God has made us in a way that our images in Christ are engraven upon His palms till the end of time. This truth is also corroborated in John 10:28-29 “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand”
God does not forget about our work and labour of love for him, all of which will not go unrewarded. Trials may grow by leaps and bounds, we may feel pressured on every side, we may feel like our prayers are unheeded or like they don’t ever go beyond the ceilings , and we get so tired, to hold on or trust further. But then we must trust in the Lord at all times, particularly when it seems our ship is sinking, as this is when our faith is considered very essential.
Does GOD forget his promises?
Absolutely not! Men will lie; men will withdraw commitments; men will fail to honour promises; men will inadvertently forget. But know that delay is never denial. Sweetheart, you may not remember all of God’s promises, but hey God never forgets any one of them. Because God is ever faithful; his promises are also ever sure. Joshua 23:14 says “And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.”
No matter how long it takes, God remembers and has our best interest at heart. God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? – Numbers 23:19. I am not in doubt that the only thing that God surely does forget is forgiven sin.
Anytime you are tempted to think that God has forgotten about you, consider the lines of these songs: “He is Able” by Darwin Hobbs and Israel Houghton’s “He Knows My Name” and remember that God’s memory is not a failing one!

  • Thank you Dewumi for that encouraging and well thought out piece. However, I’ll like to add that GOD is not the author of delay or unanswered prayers – ignorance is! The almighty GOD has given us HIS Spirit to guide us into a life of joy, godliness and fulfilment; but how many of us involve the Holy Spirit in our daily affairs? The EASIEST and QUICKEST way to receive divine help is to ask the Holy Spirit questions, and for direction. GOD the Father does not want us to wait for years before we know His SPECIFIC WILL for our lives; unfortunately that is the situation with many Christians. Many believers erroneously think that GOD is bound to grant their wishes because certain Bible verses say so. Thus they lay hold of the Written Word for years, expecting GOD to fulfill His ”promise.” Part 2 will come shortly.

  • GOD wants us, believers, to know certain basic truths about HIS ways, especially on the subject of personal prayer requests.

    How GOD Answers Prayers
There are three basic truths that undergird all answered prayer requests.

*1. GOD can speak to the believer by the Holy Spirit, giving him/her instructions or direction; and if/when the believer obeys, his/her request will be granted. This is perhaps GOD’s favorite method of granting our desires.

    2. GOD can speak to or move, not the believer, but somebody else to do something about the prayer requests of another believer.

**3. GOD can prevail on the situation by HIS power without any agency. Unfortunately, this is how many believers subconsciously expect GOD to grant their wishes.

In addition to the above stated truths, GOD wants believers in Christ to engage the Holy Spirit in dialogue every time we have needs before we direct our requests to GOD.

  • …..Part 3…..
It’s important to add that ther are many christians in whose lives the Holy Spirit has no say. These are christians who know where to get help apart from GOD.

Believers are expected to broach every detail of their need or desire with the Holy Spirit in order to know exactly how, and what, to pray – see the wisdom of GOD in the gift of tongues?

God is not interested in making us wait for several years before we enjoy certain natural blessings like marital fulfilment or fruits of the womb. Many believers are simply ignorant or bent on having their own way, instead of asking the Holy Spirit for guidance. Will share some testimonies to underscore my line of thought.

    1. My wife and I were prayng for a family friend – a 38yr old lady. After some prayer efforts, the Lord answered and said ”Bunmi (not her real name) is emotionally fulfilled without a man. There is no space in her heart for a husband.” We investigated and found it to be true. We couldn’t tell her. She is 41 this year……

  • …will create time to conclude my comment…

  • I’m sorry I’ll not be able to share more testimonies as promised…

In conclusion, believers should start talking to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him for direction/instructions. By that you will know exactly what the problem is and what to do about it.

If or when GOD wants you to wait, HE will tell you clearly.

Holy Spirit is GOD’s Representative in our (believers) lives. The earlier you start talking to Him the better.

    God bless.

  • If or when GOD wants you to wait, He will tell you clearly.

Christians should not assume that GOD wants them to wait. Let Him say it to you by the Holy Spirit.

I had set out some lofty goals, which I could have achieved with little efforts, but GOD spoke to me clearly to shelve them. When I obeyed, God began to unveil HIS glorious will for my life. The price of obedience was not without pains – it was anticipated, but the reward more than compensate for the pains.

Long and short, the believer will save time and unnecessary frustrations by asking the Holy Spirit for help.

Ask HIM for RHEMA concerning that situation and you will know what to do.
