No, I am not going to rant about the poor safety standards, lack of oversight or the greed and avarice that led to this disaster. Nope. I wont even say a word about the government and regulatory agencies and how hopelessly inept they are. Not one word!
What I will discuss are two things that occurred in the aftermath of the mishap that show without ambiguity that our society has lost its soul.
First is this picture. Why is this guy taking a picture of himself in front of this tragedy. What does it say about him? What does it say about the rest of us? It was bad enough that the crash site was a veritable feast for voyeurs and thieves. But this – this is just bad! Who is this guy? He should be named and shamed! I really have no words.
Second is this story :
Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Monday rescued three children from the scene of Sunday’s Dana Air plane crash.
Fashola had visited the site early on Monday when he was informed that the three children had roaming about since Sunday afternoon, after the plane destroyed their flat.
They had been sent on an errand by their parents shortly before the plane hit the house. By the time they returned, they could not find their parents.
There are fears that their parents may have died when the plane struck their flat.
I read it and I was just horrified. You mean those three little kids spent the night at the crash site? Nobody – NOBODY thought it fit to take them home, give them a bed, some food, some comfort? Oh the trauma! As I type this, there are tears in my eyes. There was such a huge crowd at the site and nobody could try to accommodate three traumatized and terrified children? It is inconceivable to me. No churches in Lagos showed up at the site to meet any possible needs that may arise? What about our emergency body (NEMA I think it is called)? They had no plan to provide emergency accommodation for the displaced? Nobody in the neighborhood? Incredible! I will never be able to understand that. NEVER!
What kind of a people are we becoming? Lord have mercy!
